Denmark ETIAS | Eligibility and Limited Validity

A new pre-travel authorization system, known as the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) somewhat like the ones that Australia, Canada, and the United States of America already have, will be implemented by the European Union by November 2023. Thus, it will be necessary to obtain an ETIAS for Denmark before traveling there.

ETIAS to Denmark is more of a visa waiver than a visa, like the Schengen Visa that many travelers from eligible nations do require before traveling to Denmark or any other country in Europe. Implementing such a system is intended to assist European Union member states in more effectively regulating who is permitted entry into Denmark and the EU in general.

ETIAS for Denmark: An Overview

The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) is a system for approving travel to the Schengen area member nations of the European Union. The EU Member State of the first destination has the final say when it comes to crossing the external border. 

Denmark is a Schengen state since March 25, 2001, and a member of the European Union since January 1, 1973. Hence, it is one of the thirty nations in Europe that will require an ETIAS travel authorization from visa-exempt visitors.

ETIAS will conduct pre-travel screening of visitors who have visa-free entry to the Schengen Area including Denmark. It will allow member states to withhold authorization from those who are deemed to constitute a security threat, a risk for irregular migration, or a risk to the public’s health.

Visa-free travelers going to Denmark will require a valid travel document as well as an ETIAS authorization to pass via an external Schengen border.

Who is Eligible for Denmark ETIAS?

Non-EU nationals from eligible countries who want to visit Denmark after November 2023 will require an ETIAS visa waiver. Not just Denmark, but all European Union members of the Schengen area must meet this new entry criterion once it comes into effect.

Passport and Validity for ETIAS to Denmark

The following details with respect to the passport must be provided to apply for a Danish ETIAS

• Valid passport
• Passport number
• Dates of issue and expiration date of the passport
• Citizenship of the applicant
• An overview of health and other medical details

• Criminal Record History (if applicable)

Legal guardians must fill out a form for minors. Additionally, those who have family members who are citizens of the EU must provide documentation of their familial ties, and other background information and provide details of the residence card.

The ETIAS application will be available in Danish as well as 23 other official European languages. Once authorized, the Denmark ETIAS will be valid for three years. As long as visitors stay a maximum of ninety days throughout a one-hundred-and-eighty-day period, they are permitted to enter Denmark or any other Schengen nation several times.

Denmark ETIAS Travel Authorization with Limited Validity

When to apply for a limited-validity ETIAS to Denmark:

If a traveler meets both of the following requirements, he/she may request an ETIAS to Denmark with limited validity: 

1) Visitor needs to travel because of a pressing humanitarian necessity or to fulfill a major responsibility.

2) If a traveler believes there is a chance his/her ETIAS application won’t be approved or that his/her authorization has already been denied, canceled, or suspended.

Only the Danish authorities and those of the nation requesting ETIAS have the authority to decide whether to give a travel authorization with limited validity. When evaluating such a request, Danish authorities may consider a variety of factors, for instance:

• a condition that is life-threatening to the applicant or immediate family members.
• the applicant’s desire to attend the burial of a descendant or ascendant relative.
• a medical emergency.
• involvement in intergovernmental meetings.
• a requirement to appear in court.
• granting of transit and short-term lodging rights.

Is the ETIAS for Denmark Only for Vacation Travel Purposes?

The ETIAS for Denmark will be a new type of travel authorization designed for transient tourists and business travelers to Denmark and the rest of Europe. It will be for travelers who are currently not required to obtain a visa.
